A special connection exists between St. Gregory of Nyssa Church and the Hogar Rafael Ayau Orphanage in Guatemala City, Guatemala. This link was established when then Hieromonk Matthias (Moriak), now Bishop Matthias of the Orthodox Church in America, Diocese of the Midwest, was pastor here at St. Gregory's.
Bishop Matthias made annual visits to Hogar Rafael Ayau often taking with him parishioners from St. Gregory's. These trips opened up new ways for the parishioners of St. Gregory's to apply their skills as doctors, nurses, teachers, therapists and other talents to care for the orphans.
